At NFT Paris, we interviewed Sébastien Borget, co-founder and COO of The Sandbox. With the metaverse projected to reach a staggering $103.6 billion by 2025, platforms like The Sandbox—decentralized virtual worlds on the Ethereum blockchain—are leading this digital transformation.

Borget has also co-founded Artverse, a digital art gallery and cultural hub in Paris’s 3rd arrondissement, launched in 2024 with Arthur Madrid. Artverse serves as a bridge connecting digital and physical art, creating a space for artists, collectors, and enthusiasts to explore and celebrate digital creativity. In our discussion, Borget shared his insights into the metaverse's future, the evolution of digital art, and the innovative paths forged by The Sandbox and Artverse.

Challenges and Opportunities in the Metaverse

By 2024, the metaverse faced skepticism as it seemingly fell short of lofty expectations. Borget notes that these early aspirations may have been overly ambitious, painting a sci-fi vision of a fully immersive virtual reality. However, he emphasizes that the ecosystem remains nascent, brimming with opportunities for innovation and community engagement.

Successful ventures focus on cultivating a robust community while enhancing their product offerings. The Sandbox has prioritized its core tools—Game Maker, Game Client, and VoxEdit—to foster creativity and connection. With over 2,000 new experiences published on The Sandbox Map and 6.3 million wallets connected, 2024's Alpha Season showcased the platform's growing user engagement and creative outputs, supported by unique rewards and strong brand partnerships.

The Landscape of the Metaverse in 2024

As Borget describes, 2023 witnessed significant growth beyond initial hype, with a notable shift towards tangible progress. Improvements in VR, AR, and AI have enhanced user interactions, while the demand for seamless connectivity among various metaverse platforms has sparked innovation and collaboration efforts.

The Sandbox experienced a surge in user-generated content (UGC), with no-code tools enabling over 1,500 new experiences. The community expanded to more than 25,000 LAND owners and 62,000 Avatar owners, confirming a strong appetite for digital assets. The enthusiasm from 580,000 unique players during Alpha Season 4 demonstrated a clear desire for creative exploration within the metaverse.

Reviving the Metaverse Buzz in 2025

Looking towards the future, Borget identifies three crucial factors to reignite enthusiasm for the metaverse in 2025: enhancing player onboarding, curating engaging content, and expanding UGC platforms. Streamlined onboarding processes are essential for players hesitant about creating wallets and completing KYC verifications. Delivering relevant content effectively will enhance retention and engagement, while empowering creators with innovative tools remains vital for generating compelling experiences.

The Sandbox's Strategic Roadmap

For The Sandbox, 2025 holds exciting plans, including numerous strategic partnerships across music, entertainment, and fashion. While specific collaborations remain under wraps, players can anticipate thrilling new experiences and exclusive avatar collections in upcoming launches.

With three unique seasons planned for 2025, each containing a blend of brand collaborations and UGC experiences, The Sandbox aims to create an enticing environment for players. New features in Game Maker and Game Client will further enrich gameplay, introducing persistency, matchmaking capabilities, and innovative combat systems to enhance social and multiplayer interactions.

Emerging Practical Applications of the Metaverse

As interest in the metaverse continues to expand, practical applications are emerging around digital real estate and experiential creation. Brands and investors are increasingly purchasing virtual land, and the synergy between real-world utilities and digital platforms will likely deepen.

From virtual exhibitions to immersive music events, the potential for integrating various cultural experiences in the metaverse is vast. Fashion and personal expression are also set to thrive, with avatars becoming extensions of individual identities—all driving home the value of digital fashion and its acceptance.

The Role of AI in the Metaverse

AI's impact on the metaverse is multifaceted, positioning itself as a crucial tool for content creation rather than as a mere enhancement of gameplay. At The Sandbox, AI can accelerate the design process for creators, allowing for a focus on creativity rather than technical obstacles. Borget asserts that AI should enhance human creativity, providing tools for more personalized and engaging experiences.

Artverse's Unique Position in the Digital Art Space

Artverse sets itself apart from conventional NFT marketplaces by extending beyond digital transactions. It offers tangible spaces for experiencing digital art, uniting the digital realm with traditional art appreciation.
